D-Link DIR-655 Extreme N Wireless Router

Best wireless router.

Best Price:$117.99

D-Link DIR-655 Extreme N Wireless Router
The latest generation of wireless routers is based on the Draft 2.0 802.11n agreement. The D-Link DIR-655 is Draft 2.0 certified, and reviewers agree that it is the fastest wireless router you can buy today. It is designed for better throughput on bandwidth-hogging online games, downloading and VoIP. Reviewers love the feature set including Gigabit Ethernet support. The disadvantages are the future compatibility risk (which might not matter much if you have a simple network), and reviewers say setup is more cumbersome that it could be. The D-Link DIR-655 wireless router works with Windows XP and Vista, and Mac OS 10.4

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster

Best wireless 802.11g router.

 Best Price:$59.99

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster
Though manufacturers are phasing them out in favor of 802.11n models, 802.11g wireless routers have proven reliability and interoperability with other networking hardware. Plus, they cost less than Draft 2.0 routers, and still have sufficient speed and range for many users. The Linksys WRT54GS is the best of the still available Wireless-G routers. Though most of the coverage is old at this point, reviewers say setting up and securing this router is extraordinarily simple. The Linksys router is officially compatible with Windows XP and Vista, but not Mac computers. Even so, we've found widespread comments that Linksys routers work well with Mac computers

TRENDnet 300Mbps Wireless N Broadband Router

Best Budget wireless gaming router

Best Price:$79.99

TRENDnet 300Mbps Wireless N Broadband Router
TRENDnet is not a well-known brand in the U.S., but we found many favorable reviews of the TEW-631BRP wireless router. It is very similar to the D-Link DIR-655, but it is much cheaper, has a longer limited warranty (three years compared to one) and is compatible with Linux and older versions of Windows. It includes the same user-controllable technology as the DIR-655 to give priority to online gaming and other high-bandwidth activities. Reviewers say this wireless router performs very well in gaming. However, it lacks a Gigabit Ethernet port for wired devices (you can still connect wired devices through slower 10/100 ports).
